Welcome to a new series on my blog: Five Things, in which I tell you five interesting things about my various characters I’ve created in this game.
For the inaugural post, we’ll be taking a look at my Troll Mage, and current main, Dahkar. Let’s get started!
1. Dahkar was the very first character I ever made in World of Warcraft
I played Warcraft 3’s story mode a lot, so I was familiar with the game’s lore, but initially I was very reticent to play an MMO of any kind, even one set in this universe. I figured we’d never get any story progression, because how could we? It was an MMO, the world had to stay static so that every other player could play it as well. Eventually, I started watching friends from college play the game, and grew interested enough to join in. I knew I wanted to play a mage, and in Vanilla that meant going with either the Undead or the Trolls. And a Troll Mage? How did THAT work? Trolls weren’t the studious-wizard-in-a-tower type. It was a weird race-class combo, and it intruiged me. And I’ve kept him around ever since.
2. His name is the only one that has ever come from the random name generator in WoW’s character creator
I wanted to make sure my character’s name was appropriate to the lore. It was (and still is) a big deal for me, because I knew I’d want him to have a backstory in the game. So I figured the random name generator would only spit out lore-appropriate names. After trying it out a few times and not seeing a name I liked, it eventually came up with Dakhar. I liked it, but it said the name was taken already. So I swapped the H and K and got Dahkar. Honestly, I wish I could go back in time to change it to something I’d come up with, but I’d feel wrong doing so now. It’s been there for years.
3. With two exceptions, he’s been my main for the entirety of my WoW playtime to this point
Since Vanilla onward, I’ve only NOT played him as a main twice. Once was in Mists of Pandaria, when I elected to switch to my Warlock. I wasn’t on a raid team at that time until later in that expansion, when I switched back to Dahkar to do Siege of Orgrimmar with the raid team I’m still with. The second was in early Legion, when I’d tried to switch to an elemental shaman. I went back to Dahkar because elemental’s damage was really really low and I wasn’t enjoying myself. I stuck with him again
4. In my personal story, he was one of the very first troll mages.
Though this isn’t official lore, a commonly held fan theory about how Trolls learned to be mages in World of Warcraft is that after the Third War ended, many troll scavenged Arcane tomes, spellbooks, and other items from fallen Alliance mages. They began studying these tomes and found themselves with an aptitude for magic, and the teachings spread. Dahkar, in my personal canon, was one of those first trolls.
5. His current appearance is his longest held because my wife picked it.
Originally Dahkar, looked very different. He had much shaggier black hair in a long ponytail and the “gouger” style tusks.
When the barbershop was added, I played around with a few additional styles for him, including giving him multiple ponytails and changing his color to white, because I reasoned that he was an old man like the stereotypical human archmages.
Ultimately, I decided I wanted to change his look, and asked my wife for input. She came up with his current appearance. I haven’t wanted to change it since. Somehow, she just knew what fit the character.
